STOP getting your clients chronically confused when they first see your ads in the wild.

Updated: Oct 6, 2024

Have you ever wondered why some businesses just seem to make it while others fail?

The reason is way more simple than you think. You would think it’s some enormous unique selling proposition or a good team that can work together well and while that’s partially true it’s not the main reason.

This is the number 1 mistake people have been making for 100+ years and if fixed, it will massively improve your numbers.

When you think of marketing, what do you think of? The huge billboards? Ads?

Most people would say that they first think of ads when they hear the words marketing so it’s no surprise that when small businesses first decide to start marketing they decide to start with creating an ad campaign.

And usually, there wouldn't be a problem, but I said usually.

These small businesses don't know what they're doing, they have no idea.

They think that an ad is made to get your name out there, to build a brand, to tell everyone why you are the best, and that’s the purpose of an ad, right? WRONG!

The purpose of an ad is to get a response, something you can measure the success of your ad in, a clear instruction for the prospect to do after they’ve seen your ad.

But what happens when these small businesses just start without a sense of what to do is that they create something I like to describe as “Occam's razor”

Are you familiar with the word: Occam's razor? Well if not here's a quick explanation:

It’s the idea that if you have two competing ideas(in this case ads) explaining the same phenomenon, you should prefer the simpler one.

Well, this sounds stupid, right? BUT IT’S TRUE! Especially when it comes to marketing and ads.

The reason people's ads are succeeding is because they are simple and have a clear sense of direction for the prospect after reading/watching it.

When an ad is complicated and has a bunch of clutter like why you are the best or your brand, it becomes confusing for the prospect, and the worst thing you could have in business is a confused customer. Why?

Because a confused customer does NOTHING! Leading to wasted money, a missed opportunity and you deciding that marketing isn't for you, forever something your business with the label: Small business.

So what's the solution?

You need to give them clear instructions in all ads because people are horrible at following complicated and long instructions.

The instructions could be giving you their email address, filling out a form on your site, becoming god, or just reading the rest of the ad. Okay, well maybe not becoming god but you get where I'm going.

Make your ad simple and easy to understand because most people suck at following complicated instructions without a clear carrot for them at the end of the stick.

And it doesn't help when you add a bunch of unnecessary information, confusing them and getting them to do NOTHING! So make it simple for them, and you will see your ads succeeding.
